Get started on Halloween crafts. An easy way to introduce collage to young ones while encouraging creativity!

Goals:

  • To introduce the art form of collage through a simple Fall activity
  • To develop fine motor skills
  • To encourage creativity

Before You Start:
You will need orange construction paper, black construction paper, pencils, scissors and glue sticks. You may also choose to set out glitter and collage accessories to give the children more options for decorating and customizing their jack-o-lanterns.

Let’s Get Started!
Step 1.
Ask the children to draw a large circle or oval onto orange construction paper and have them cut it out.

Step 2.
Instruct them to then cut out various shapes from the black construction paper, such as circles, triangles, moon shapes, rectangles, and squares. Any shape can become part of the jack-o-lantern’s face.

Step 3.
Collect all of the black shapes from the group and put them into a bowl. Have each child to pull out about 5 or 6 pieces.

Step 4.
Using the pieces they’ve taken from the bowl, the children will glue each piece where they think it belongs on the face of the jack-o-lantern. Allow the children to use their imaginations!

Furthermore:
After all of pieces have been glued, allow the children to experiment with other collage shapes, glitter, and other embellishments to decorate their jack-o-lanterns.
